July 2008 - Sadly Llanboidy are no longer producing cheese as Sue Jones and her husband have decided to take retirement. However she is still a member of Cheeses From Wales and there are stocks of the cheese available at the moment.

Llanboidy Cheesemakers is a small family business who have a well deserved national reputation for producing high quality traditional hand-made cheeses, matured in their own natural rinds on their farm in West Wales.

Started in 1985 by Sue Jones using the milk from her herd of rare-breed Red Poll cows, she produced the unique unpasteurised cheese Llanboidy Cheeses.

The Llanboidy’s Cilowen Organic range of cheeses was developed later in 2000 by Alice, Sue’s main cheesemaker and Colin, pasteuriser and senior assistant. The organically produced milk is supplied from several designated farms nearby and then pasteurised in Llanboidy’s dairy before cheesemaking.

THE CHEESES

All the Llanboidy cheeses are hand-made in the traditional way and pressed gradually over 48 hours to achievee their characteristic texture and firmness.

Llanboidy’s unpasteurised cheeses are unique being the only cheeses in Europe made from Red Poll cows milk – its distinctive full bodied flavour coming from the milk of this old breed of cow.

Llanboidy Cheese has a superb robust flavour in contrast to its exceptionally smooth, almost silky texture. The taste, according to its maturity and season, is best described as ‘herbal and buttery’ with an almost spicy tang which appears to be characteristic of the area in which the herd grazes.

Llanboidy with Laverbread (edible seaweed) is a younger cheese, having a particularly attractive speckled appearance and a delightfully subtle flavour.

Llanboidy’s Cilowen is mellow, creamy and gently crumbly with an exciting fresh flavour. Llanboidy’s Cilowen is also produced with added leeks, providing a younger moist cheese which develops a delicate flavour during maturation. The third in the Llanboidy’s Cilowen range is one smoked over whole Welsh oak logs to produce a subtle, silky cheese with an aroma reminiscent of wood fires.

THE AWARDS
Llanboidy Cheesemakers have been the recipient of numerous awards over the years for each of their range of cheeses, including many medals at the British and World Cheese Awards, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and Nantwich International Cheese Show.
